How Tape Recovery Works
We begin by thoroughly examining your tape for any signs of damage and determining whether the media will be accessible with our equipment. If possible, we will create a raw image of the data by performing a low level read of the tape. Then we analyze the imaged data to determine the extent and nature of the data loss. If the media cannot be accessed using our equipment, we test the individual components to determine the nature of the physical damage.
As with other forms of data recovery, the process is different depending on whether the damage was physical or logical in nature.
-
Physical recovery generally involves dealing with deteriorated magnetic coatings, cracked or broken reels or cartridge tapes, folded tape, and various other malfunctioning components. Recovering data from tape archives involves significant amounts of work that only experienced engineers can perform using specialized equipment made just for the task.
-
Logical recovery generally involves rebuilding files that have been damaged or corrupted. There are innumerable techniques for doing so, and they are entirely dependent on the archive format. Our primary focus is to keep your data safe, and with that in mind, we generally perform the recovery from the imaged copy.
Data loss can be an incredibly stressful ordeal. We empathize with what you're going through - that's why we put so much effort into making our service easier, quicker, and friendlier to use. Above all, we go to great lengths to ensure that the data recovery operation itself is safe and successful.
-
Our recovery engineers have the most experience, the best tools, and the brightest minds - they have performed over 5,000 successful data recovery operations and have recovered terabytes of data in the process.
